Studio Tour Season @ ZeroLight

Part of my role as Talent Development Manager at ZeroLight involves organising our annual Studio Tours with both Teesside and Newcastle University. Targeted at Programming students from 2nd year to MSc level, this is a great opportunity for those interested in working in the Tech Industry to get an idea first-hand of what it is like to work in a studio environment.

This year, I also added a new event to the roster of tours, this time focussing on school and college students from age 12 - 16, who were interested in coding careers. Organised in conjunction with our friends at NE1 and their initiative NE1Can, we asked students who attended local code clubs and studied basic coding at school to come along to ZeroLight to learn more about future careers in the technology sector.

The event was attended by students and teachers from the likes of St Cuthbert's School, Studio West and Newcastle College, with talks from myself, some of ZeroLight's Software Engineers and Newcastle University, followed by demos of our Virtual Reality experience and the requisite amount of pizza on our Terrace.

It was a great day and the feedback from students was that they now have a better understanding what qualifications and skills are needed to work in this sector.

After the school event, we switched our focus back to our Graduate & Internship Program welcoming both Teesside and Newcastle University (who brought an amazing 50 students this year!) to ZeroLight once again. Our current Placement Student James talked to the students about his experience so far this year with ZeroLight, including the travel he's being doing as part of his role in our Demo Team. After that recent Teesside Graduate Andrew, who joined our Tech Team in August gave practical advice about what he did to stand out to employers during his time at University. We then showcased our VR experience to the students and gave them a chance to ask questions to our Programming Team over an informal pizza lunch.

With over 100 students of all ages visiting ZeroLight over all three events in the last month, we're really excited by the level of new talent coming up the ranks in the North East, and with a number of places opening on our Graduate Program in the New Year we are eager to welcome the new generation of students to our award-winning team.
