Girls in Tech 2019 at ZeroLight

Two weeks ago, we hosted our annual Girls in Tech event in our award-winning studios on Newcastle Quayside. Created by ZeroLight and local business development initiative NE1Can, it brings together schools across the North East with tech companies to show young women the opportunities available to them and the benefits of working within the technology industry.

Our Talent Development Manager Erin opened the event with a talk on the variety of careers available within the industry and the different routes you can take to get there. This was followed by Software Engineer Kelly Logan, giving advice on how to stand out from the crowd.

The groups then got involved in different activities throughout the ZeroLight studio. Womble Bond Dickinson joined us to educate the students about technology in Law, with a few tasks to encourage them to think innovatively about legal problems. They learned about the use of new technology within the legal system and the women who are currently making the biggest changes to the Law sector with new tech.

Hedgehog Labs gave each group the challenge of creating a futuristic product, allowing the students complete creative freedom and then presenting their ideas their classmates for feedback, giving them a glimpse of the collaborative nature of design work.

Our Technical Client Liaison Phil then amazed the students with some of our latest demos! With VR experiences and the popular LG transparent OLED, they could see first-hand what can be achieved in such a progressive industry.

Each activity was created to show the girls the multitude of opportunities within the tech sector, and the range of careers that are available to them. With women making up just 17% of the UK tech sector, running these events whilst the students are at an age where they are just starting to consider career choices is so important.

The entire day was a great success, inspiring to many of the girls who attended. Thank you to Womble Bond Dickinson and Hedgehog Labs for attending, and to NE1Can for helping to organise such a great initiative.
