Matt Thompson: Software Engineer and Zwimbledon Champion 2017.
Matt put on a masterful display in the final to deservedly take home the Zwimbledon trophy. Read on to see how it panned out.
The final: Matt vs Andrew
A fitting end to a great tournament; the match saw some of the best rallies of the competition, with both players coming into the bout in great form. Matt made a statement early on in the 1st of a possible 3 games when he stormed ahead, gaining a 10-point lead over his rival. Not one to back away from a fight, though, Andrew clawed his way back into the game, levelling the scores and piling the pressure back onto Matt.
But, in the end, Matt displayed the nerve of a champ and saw the game out in style 21-13. The second game had a similar result: despite an early lead for Andrew, Matt prevailed and convincingly closed out the game, match, and tournament.
So, after a fantastic competition, let's take a look back at some of the highlights.
Tom vs Duarte
Arguably the best match of the competition, this 1st round clash went the distance and then some: finishing 24-22, this was by far and away the highest scoring game and was easily the most exciting of the first round.
Peter vs Tom
After emerging victorious from his bout against Duarte, Tom lined up against Peter in the quarterfinals, and once again put on an exciting show. Having both just got back from a 4-mile lunch-time run, this match was always going to be testing, and it didn't disappoint. In front of a transfixed crowd (plus Martin), Peter came out on top 21-15 in the close-run affair.
Matt vs Simon
This was the first heavyweight clash, with two tournament favourites going head to head in the quarterfinals. Having both cruised through the 1st round, this was also the first real test either player had faced, and it was high tempo from start to finish.
Both players started strong, pulling out all the stops, but once Matt got out in front, he held firm and beat off a late charge from Simon to win 21-16.
Dr vs Dr: Peter vs Andrew 1&2
In a strange twist of fate, our resident academics faced each other in both the 1st round and the semi-finals. First time around, Andrew came out on top 21-13 in a great match, initially knocking out fan favourite Peter. But, thanks to winning the highest scoring loser playoffs, Peter returned intent on avenging his 1st round loss.
The semi was a tense showdown, with both players out to make a statement ahead of the final, but, unfortunately for Peter, Andrew proved too much and progressed to the last stage 21-9.
Jack vs Matt
The other semi-final saw two tournament favourites clash once again. Jack and Matt headed into the game after a stream of impressive performances, and the match was poised on a knife edge. Early on, Jack took the lead and was looking strong, playing some great shots and serving well.
But as the match went on, Matt put on a real display and, in front of a baying crowd, demonstrated why he'd go on to be our champion!
What a great tournament! Roll on Zwimbledon 2018!
